A flotilla sailing holiday in the Ionian has something for everyone and the area deserves its reputation as the number one flotilla sailing destination in the world. I sailed with Seafarer last summer on their south Ionian flotilla. The flotilla departed from Lefkas marina, where we were one of eight yachts. This we found enhanced our experience  from the point of view that it was a  lot more friendly and we were able to meet everyone and even remember their names… what’s more they remembered ours! The smaller numbers also has benefits such as less time waiting your turn for  mooring and enough quay space in the little harbours to fit us all in. In the evening, we didn’t overwhelm the tavernas which made dinner that much more of relaxed and sociable affair.

Over the duration of our flotilla sailing in Greece, we were reminded on a number of occasions the flexibility that seafarer offered us to do as we pleased. We thus decided to detour from the program in order to have an overnight stay in Vasiliki, on the south of Lefkas, recognised as being one of the very best windsurfing venues. Indeed with some state of the art windsurfing kit, fresh winds and flat water, the conditions were perfect and the detour well worth it.

The Ionian has a great mix of busier places like chic Fiscardo on the island of Kefalonia or Vathy on Ithaka, with quieter sleepy little fishing villages on the tiny islands of Kastos and Kalamos or villages like KIoni. For us, the ultimate joy was always to pull into some of the quieter bays for a night under the stars. In the morning we would opt for a leisurely start with some great swimming and snorkelling in the crystal clear waters where the visibility is superb.

Those that say there is no wind in the Ionian obviously got into harbour too early, we found that after 2 or 3pm, fresh sea breezes of up to 20 knots, were quite typical. Thoughtfully, the breeze would die down again at sun set to ensure we had a quiet, peaceful evening.

All in all a great time was had by all and I would recommend it to anyone.

Seafarer offer flotilla itineraries in the North and South Ionian with departures from Lefkas and Corfu. Our package included flights from Gatwick to Preveza and transfers to and from Lefkas marina.
