No vacation is more special, intimate or romantic than a honeymoon. Although many brides and grooms opt for a traditional June wedding followed by a summer break, by doing so they miss out on magical winter nuptials with an intriguing seasonal honeymoon. Recently, however, newlyweds have become more astute at finding the right destination and the best travel time.

Here are some ideas that can create lifelong memories and captivating dinner conversations.

The end of November is the beginning of the tourist season in India, making it an ideal time to visit the cooler northern region’s top sights: the majestic Taj Mahal in Agra and the “Paris of India” Jaipur, also known as Pink City. Further south, Goa once offered a haven for backpackers and party animals; now, it provides reputable resorts that cater specifically to couples. And the Malabar Coast in south-west Kerala is the perfect destination for honeymooners who enjoy lounging on warm tropical beaches, relaxing with Ayurvedic spa treatments and exploring the many waterways by boat.

If winter sun is not a requirement, cheap flight deals can be found for snowy landscapes that will delight newlyweds. The fantastic light show provided by the Northern Lights – aurora borealis – enhances the thrill of cuddling together under the stars. In the northernmost city, Tromsø, honeymooners can stay in a traditional wooden lodge with an outdoor Scandinavian hot tub, embark on mystical trips across pristine panoramas on sledges pulled by huskies, or tour the Arctic Cathedral and quaint wooden houses in the city center.

Although Hawaii offers superb weather the year-round, newly married lovers of water sports will appreciate the temperate clime of a winter honeymoon there. The surfing season stretches from late October through March, when enthusiasts can be spotted riding fantastic waves at Hookipa Beach on Maui, Hanalei Bay at Kauai and the legendary North Shore of Oahu, which includes Waimea Bay and Banzai Pipeline. Hawaii’s natural wonders are awe-inspiring, and Maui’s west coast provides sheltered viewing spots for whale watching from late November through May.

Some European cities such as Prague and Paris seem to hog all the fame for winter destinations, but Rome offers just as much culture, history and beauty – without the awkwardness of winter travel. Rome’s antiquities exude a rich, romantic ambience that permeates the countless historical sites, heritage monuments, spectacular architecture, and masterpieces of art. Newlyweds can celebrate the beginning of their union by creating a photomontage with monuments that have withstood the test of time: the Vatican, St. Peter’s Basilica and the majestic Colosseum. And numerous gardens, museums, galleries and ruins are just waiting to be explored.

Regardless of whether a bride and groom prefer tropical getaways, wholesome snowscapes or historical centers, a winter honeymoon can be designed around any of these preferences. Amateur travel planners tend to forget that distant climates don’t have to match the local scene, but the reality is that the winter season offers a wider range of vacation possibilities than sweltering summers. With such high potential, a winter honeymoon is bound to be a magical, unforgettable experience.
