Fancy sunning yourself in one of Europe’s most glamorous destinations? Of course you do! Choose to visit southern France on your next break and I’m pretty confident you’ll come back feeling refreshed and showing off a fabulous tan. As this part of the country receives gorgeous sunshine and pleasant temperatures for much of the year, it’s a great place to relax.

Saint-Tropez

Saint-Tropez

However, while it’s fairly obvious that the south of France is a wonderful holiday destination for sunseekers, deciding where you should go is a little bit tricky. With the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur coastline stretching for some 900 km and there being many wonderful coastal towns and villages to choose from, you’re really spoilt for choice when figuring out where exactly to stay.

Admittedly, it isn’t the worst problem in the world to have, but if you need a little help, the following places are well worth considering.

Saint-Tropez

Regarded as one of the most popular European holiday destinations for the rich and famous, Saint-Tropez is not just a fantastic place to rub shoulders with the stars but also to rub some suntan lotion on your arms and legs to bask in the sunshine.

Head to the gorgeous Pampelonne beach and you can nestle down on golden sand and take in amazing views of the Mediterranean Sea. Although there are more than 20 private beach clubs here – establishments that largely cater for the rich and famous – there ought to be plenty of space along the 3-mile stretch for you to catch some rays.

Spend a couple of hours relaxing on Pampelonne and you’re likely to soon work up an appetite. Luckily, there are a number of restaurants located right next to the waterfront, including Golfe Azur and La Bouillabaisse, where you can tuck into authentic Provencal specialities such as red mullet.

Not only is the beach the biggest in Saint-Tropez, but it’s also among the most popular, with up to 30,000 people descending on it each day in the summer months. If you fancy somewhere a little quieter, however, stop off at La Glaye or La Ponche. Both of these stretches are smaller than Pampelonne, so are far less crowded and much better for enjoying a relaxing dip in the sea.

Theoule-sur-Mer

Although Saint-Tropez is certainly one of the most popular destinations in this part of the country, it’s definitely not the only place where you can soak up some sunshine.

In fact, I think you’ll find booking a southern France villa in Theoule-sur-Mer will provide you with plenty of opportunity to work on gaining a glistening tan. While you can certainly sunbathe in the comfortable surroundings of your holiday home, it’d be a mistake to not check out the public beaches that are to be found in the town.

These include Plage du Suveret and Plage du Chateau, among others, though whichever you visit you can expect to relax on pristine sand and take in amazing sea views. This part of the country also features stunning red rock coves that are ideal for exploring, while you can also try your hand at windsurfing and water skiing, all of which are activities that are ideal if you fancy building up a sweat while working on your tan.
