When thinking about the ideal place to visit for Valentine’s Day, New York will top many people’s lists. There is no end of romantic activities to participate in, ranging from a nice stroll through Central Park, through to a weekend in a luxury hotel with a view of the city.

How to Spend the Day

If you can’t afford to stay at a swanky hotel, consider indulging yourselves with breakfast at one. Many of these will even offer a great view of the city from their dining room. Once you have finished breakfast, head on over to Central Park for a romantic walk. Central Park has been the location for many romantic moments in the movies, and this is your chance to recreate your favourite moment for yourselves. If you are an active couple, you may want to try ice skating at Wollman Rink, as featured in the film Love Story. If you prefer to sit back and relax, the best way to see Central Park has to be by horse and carriage.

If you have never been to New York before, visiting the Empire State Building is a must, and whilst visiting a tourist attraction may not sound like a romantic thing to do, when you see the stunning views on offer, you will soon realise why it is such a popular place for proposals.

Even if you cannot afford to make a purchase, a visit to Tiffany & Co.’s flagship store on Fifth Avenue is a must for any romantic trip to New York. Prepare to be amazed by some of the world’s most spectacular jewellery, and if you are a couple who are planning a future engagement, it is a great place to get inspiration for rings.

Dinner Cruises

A dinner cruise is a great way of getting both a view of the famous Manhattan skyline, and having a romantic dinner for two. In order to give plenty of time for the boat to circumnavigate Manhattan, these cruises are usually around 3 hours long, giving you plenty of time for not only a leisurely meal, but also time to dance away to the live music that many of these cruises have on offer. After your meal, you can keep each other warm, whilst drinking champagne out on the deck.

Where to Stay

The chances are if you’ve flown all the way to New York for Valentine’s Day, you aren’t planning on spending the entire trip in your hotel room. This doesn’t however mean you shouldn’t book a romantic hotel for your stay. The Gramercy Park Hotel is recognised by many as one of the most romantic hotels in the city, overlooking Gramercy Park, which is only open to hotel guests and those living parkside. The hotel has three fireplaces which you can cuddle up by, and has an art collection that would rival any museum.

If you like something a bit different, The Jane is designed like the sleeper compartment on an express train, with staff even wearing traditional bellhop uniforms, and rooms designed to look like those on train and ship cabins. Whilst the rooms with bunk beds are unlikely to fit in with most people’s idea of romantic, the Captain’s Cabins, offer views of the river and/or a terrace, with a double or queen sized bed and 300-thread-count linen – what more could you want?
